pneumatized articular tubercle and pneumatized roof of glenoid fossa on cone beam computed tomography: prevalence and characteristics in selected iranian population
Authors
abstract
introdouction: mastoid pneumatization is often complete by the age of 5-years and may involve the temporo mandibular joint (tmj) region, including the pneumatized articular tubercle (pat) and pneumatized roof of the glenoid fossa (prgf). to prevent surgical complications, the diagnosis of these air cells is important. the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pat and prgf in the iranian population. materials and methods: in this cross-sectional study, convenience sampling was used to select participants. cbct radiographs of 239 patients were evaluated retrospectively. prevalence, location, age, and gender of patients with pat and prgf were determined. spss 18.0 was used for statistical analysis. results: of the 239 patients, 51 (21.3%) presented with pat and 14 (5.9%) with prgf. the mean age of the pat patients was 47.92 ± 14.39 years. unilateral pat and prgf were found in 35 (68.6%) and 8 (57.1%) patients, respectively. pat prevalence was 51% in females and 49% in males. conclusion: surgeons planning tmj intervention should evaluate radiographic imaging preoperatively to prevent intraoperative complications.

full textPrevalence and characteristics of pneumatized articular tubercle: First large series in Iranian people
PURPOSE This study was performed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pneumatized articular tubercle or eminence among a defined group of Iranian people. MATERIALS AND METHODS Digital panoramic radiographs of 1694 patients in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Hamadan Dental School, Iran were evaluated retrospectively to detect the above lesion. Finally, 1563 ra...
full textEvaluation of pneumatization in the articular eminence and roof of the glenoid fossa with cone-beam computed tomography.
BACKGROUND Detection of air cavities, so called pneumatizations, nearby to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area is important, as they represent sites of minimal resistance and facilitate the spread of various pathologies into the joint as inflammation, tumor or fractures and serve as a possible complicating factor in TMJ surgery. AIMS To determine the prevalence of pneumatization of the art...
full textPrevalence and morphometric features of fossa navicularis on cone beam computed tomography in Turkish population.
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and morphometric features of fossa navicularis, a close radiographic anatomic variation of canalis basilaris medianus of the basiocciput, in a Turkish population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group consisted of 723 patients (female: 420, male: 303) having CBCT scans. The patient...
full textPrevalence of Idiopathic Osteosclerosis on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images
Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of idiopathic osteosclerosis on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients. Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, 240 CBCT scans of patients (125 women, 115 men) referred to a private oral and maxillofacial radiology clinic in Tehran in 2013 were selected and evaluated. Presence of idiopathic osteosc...
